Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in talks to play the Joker in director Todd Phillips’ untitled origin movie.

According to Variety, Phoenix is Phillips’ top choice for the role, and sources say Phoenix has agreed to play the Clown Prince of Crime. The movie would be a standalone production, and would fall under a “yet to be announced new banner of DC Comics”, leaving Jared Leto to reprise his role in Suicide Squad 2.

Phillips will co-write the script with Scott Silver in addition to directing. Martin Scorsese will serve as producer.

Phoenix’s reputation for playing strange, complicated characters makes him seem like a great fit to play The Joker. Sources say the story will take place in the 80’s, following the character’s life in Gotham City as he transforms into the infamous supervillain, and will be more in the style of a gritty crime drama than a comic book movie.

This isn’t the first time Phoenix has been considered for roles within the DC universe. He previously was considered for the role of Lex Luthor in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but turned it down. He also was in talks for Doctor Strange, but backed out of that as well.
