Melissa O’Neil has been cast as one of the female leads in ABC‘s straight-to-series light crime drama The Rookie, opposite Nathan Fillion.
According to Deadline, O’Neil has been cast in the role of Lucy, an LAPD rookie who is intelligent, tough, confident and compassionate. Lucy comes from a rough background, and is the first member of her family to have chosen an honest, respectable path. She struggles with an overbearing training officer and might be developing a budding romance with Fillion’s character.
The Rookie pairs Fillion once again with former Castle executive producer/showrunner Alexi Hawley. Fillian plays John Nolan, the oldest rookie on the LAPD. Surrounded by rookies twenty years his junior, he must navigate the dangerous, humorous and unpredictable world of a “young cop”, determined to make his second shot at life count.
O’Neil’s TV credits include Dark Matter, Lost Generation, Rogue, This Life and Canadian Idol (she was the Season 3 winner).
The Rookie will air on ABC but does not have a release date at this time. The show comes from Mark Gordon/Entertainment One and ABC Studios. Fillion will executive produce along with Hawley, Mark Gordon and Nicholas Pepper, Michelle Chapman, and Jon Steinberg.
